  5.                                  Team. He did not make 
  6. the final cut, but he played well enough to 
  7. impress NBA scouts. The Philadelphia
  8. 76ers selected Charles with the fifth pick of
  9. the first round of the 1984 NBA draft.

  11. Charles became a starter for the Sixers 
  12. toward the end of his rookie year. In his 
  13. second season, 1985-86, he averaged 20 
  14. points and 12.8 rebounds per game, for a 
  15. team that was a contender for the NBA 
  16. championship.
